Infiniti’s new variable compression ratio engine is apparently a joke. CR just tested a QX50 with it, and it got 2 mpg worse overall mileage, and 7 mpg worse highway mileage than a BMW X3 with its plain vanilla 2.0 turbo. The Infiniti was slightly quicker, but not significantly so. The Audi Q5 also gets better mpg, and is quicker than the Infiniti. It looks like we have another case of complexity for complexity’s sake.

The QX50, the X3, and the Q5 are all within 80 pounds of the same weight.

@Kit – I’d still like to test it myself, but that’s a real bummer to hear. Let’s hope the new Mazda engine is as good as advertised.

The GT-R prototype looks great!

Yeah, I’m looking forward to more tests, but CR actually does a pretty good job on acceleration and mpg tests.

I also hope the new Mazda engine works well. We shall see.

I like the concept of “pods” delivering groceries, but just like some other proposed autonomous delivery systems, what about the last 100 feet? So this pod shows up in front of your house with six bags of groceries… Do you make six trips down the driveway to the street to haul them into the house? Fun too to lug a heavy pack of bottle water or 24-pack of soda up from the street. Grandma will think twice after the first time.

5) Good point. I can see myself as the role of grandma and looking at the walk from the street to the house. Plus how long will the pod wait before you show up if you are in the middle of something? 1, 3, 5 minutes, or ? If the pod is autonomous, how will the pod identify you? Will it know you’re not a 65 year old grandpa versus the 22 year old thug taking your groceries?

Was hoping the next gen GTR would be better looking than this. Still has the trout mouth, and sharp line angles that make the vehicle look pieced together from odd parts. A GTR has brilliant performance, but no grace in it’s lines.

I like the GT-R the side profile reminds me of the early 70s model.

As for robots , It always feels tat they are to take more jobs then add for humans unless your a programmer or repair tech for them. They do remove the low skill repetitive jobs ,but can assist humans in some tasks. I guess I’m torn between whether they actually will do as the panel says or my guy instinct that they take jobs away.

A big rig with 250 mile range would okay for city deliveries ,but won’t help open road guys. That is 4 hours of range ay 60-65 MPH. Until electrics can match combustion in range and price it will be like pushing rope.

I thought Chevy is killing the Volt? If so I’m surprised they are still updating it.

News from the Tesla camp is the email requesting $2500 for Tesla to actually order your Model 3. Now , they still won’t give you any kind of production date and after 3 days, none of your money is refundable. Looks like a big cash grab to keep the company afloat until Tesla can keep the investors happy and throw more money at Elon.

“I Feel Pretty” is based on a pretty little lie: Looks don’t matter. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

In the film, the down-on-herself Renee (played by Amy Schumer) conks her head in a SoulCycle accident and awakens believing that she has miraculously become supermodel-hot. She revels in it — charging into a bikini contest, snagging a promotion and basking in the affections of a beefy corporate scion — only to discover that her looks never changed a bit. The benefits she thought she accrued through beauty were won instead through her newfound self-confidence.

The movie suggests that the only thing holding back regular-looking women is their belief that looking regular holds them back at all. That attitude puts the onus on individual women to improve their self-esteem instead of criticizing societal beauty standards writ large. The reality is that expectations for female appearances have never been higher. It’s just become taboo to admit that.

This new beauty-standard denialism is all around us. It courses through cosmetics ads, fitness instructor monologues, Instagram captions and, increasingly, pop feminist principles. In the forthcoming book “Perfect Me,” Heather Widdows, a philosophy professor at the University of Birmingham, England, convincingly argues that the pressures on women to appear thinner, younger and firmer are stronger than ever. Keeping up appearances is no longer simply a superficial pursuit; it’s an ethical one, too. A woman who fails to conform to the ideal is regarded as a failure as a person.
